Name in Lights
by Filip Johnsson
Introduction
This inspiring Swedish man’s introduction says it all: “ Hej! I’m David Irigoyen and I am a 31 year old dad/ DJ/ mens fashion store manager”.
David Irigoyen has successfully combined his three biggest passions in life: Music, Fashion and his Family.
When I met him a few years ago the first things I noticed, besides his overwhelming charisma, was his creativity and knowledge of music and clothes. To me he is a great example that it sometimes is better to know a lot about a few things than little about a lot.
Profile
Name: lillDavidProfession: “I manage a mens clothing store in stockholm called C. I also dj & produce electronic dance music with two of my friends under the name NAME IN LIGHTS. Together with a fourth member we run a record label called FEED.”
What I have done in the past: “I’ve been involved with music for almost as long as I can remember. I started DJing when I was 13 which came really naturally to me as I always used to record mixtapes for my classmates in grade school. Since then I’ve played at nearly all venues worth mentioning in Stockholm & also a few other places. NAME IN LIGHTS is spawned out of a weekly house music club I did together with my friends Filip & Emir. Together with Erik started FEED in 2007.”
The first letters of their names make the word FEED.

Another one of my big interests I’ve had since my early teens is of course fashion, even though one of my first jobs was at a film theatre. I started out selling tickets & popcorn & eventually made my way in to the projection room working as a projectionist. I liked working there a lot, but I always felt that I had other obstacles to conquer, so I left the theatre & got a new job where I got to work with my number one interest besides music, Jeans. After six years of working in a number of different fashion stores in Stockholm, Per & Andreas from Caliroots contacted me & told me they were opening a new shop & that they thought I was the right man to manage it. The rest, as they say, is history.”
Interview
What made you decide to start http://denimandbeats.blogspot.com/?
“There isn’t really any deeper meaning to denimandbeats. I guess the blog kinda works as a bookcase or a cupboard, I mean I see it as a place for me to sort and store stuff that I find interesting and good. I guess you can say that the blog also represents my style in a way since a lot of the stuff I post has to do with clothing & music that I like.”You are also a DJ. Is it hard to combine that with work and being a parent?
A lot of people change when they become a parent. Did you change?
“I didn’t change that much actually, I still find the same things interesting & like doing the same things as before. The biggest change I guess is that I don’t go out as much & that I’d rather spend time in the studio than DJing, but I think that has more to do with how well things have been going with NAME IN LIGHTS recently. There’s been a lot of practical changes in my life though since Levi was born, I’ve switched jobs, Evelina & I have bought our own apartment & We’ve released the first NAME IN LIGHTS 12.”

Who is your maven and why is this person inspirational to you?
Fashion:“I guess Evelina is my main fashion inspiration. She inspires me to try new things that I would never think of. But I’m also fortunate enough to have well-dressed friends who I get a lot of inspiration from. I also get a lot of ideas from a magazine called Free & Easy.
In the fashion production world I have a lot of respect for Hiroshi Fujiwara. I think that he alone has basically laid down the foundation & paved the way for so called street wear to evolve in to high fashion brands like White Mountaineering & Undercover. Not to mention all the work he’s done with Fragment Design over the years. Another very inspiring person is Tetsu Nishiyama & his WTAPS label. I always find myself wanting to buy every piece from the WTAPS collections. The super high quality & very minimalistic pieces from Hiroki Nakamura’s visvim are also very inspiring, Less is more as they say…”
Music: “Musically there are loads of influences. A good Giorgio Moroder or Cerrone or P&P production is always inspiring. The Norwegian producers such as Todd Terje & Lindström create truly awesome songs, but I think maybe the main inspiration for Name In Lights is in between the three of us. Maybe that’s why a lot of people think that we have our own specific sound.”

You have your own style. How would you describe it?
“You mean fashion right?” “Someone once called me a cross between denim otaku & ura-hara street wear nerd. I guess it's either that or simply hipster douchebag.”
What is your escape from stress?
“I never really get stressed out, but if I did I think a nice bottle of Barolo together with Evelina would be the perfect de-stresser.”What is your favourite motto?
“Be yourself & everything will work out in the end.”What is the best advice someone ever gave you?
“It was when someone urged me to start making my own music instead of just DJing combined with my favourite motto.”
Do you have any cool projects coming up?
“The first NAME IN LIGHTS release “Eld & Lågor EP” on FEED has been available since June. We did a remix for Nick Chacona’s “Slice Of Life” 12” that came out on Wurst records in October. Next up we have a NAME IN LIGHTS remix for Bill Brewster’s Hotel Motel project coming out on Under The Shade & a full NAME IN LIGHTS 12” coming out on Wurst early next year.”
“We’ve been asked to come play a live gig in Helsinki. We haven’t worked out all the details yet though.”
Name in Lights/ FEED Records
“The next release on FEED is Muslim Disco Club & after that we have the long awaited follow up to Erik Wikström’s Marathon EP. both will come out in early 2011.”
David’s Favourites
Favourite place to eat: “I never get disappointed at East, Råkultur or Ramen Ki-Mama.”
Favourite shops: “C (shouldn’t come as a surprice as it’s where I work), Fade Records, Snickars Records, Nitty Gritty, Mr Mudd & Mr Gold, Take 5 BKK, TRAPS BKK, Firmament and Tokyo Stop. There probably are other shops that are equally or even more awesome, that I havent yet visted, like the Visvim stores or to the Black Flag shop. I’m positive that they are like pieces of heaven on earth.”
Favourite place to go out: “I rarely go out anymore besides when I DJ, but when I do go out I’ll most often go to either Kåken, Marie Laveau or Tranan and end the night at an underground club like Kruthuset.”
